Atlantic Meadows, led by Carlos F Carrillo Jr.
multi-media, dimensions variable, 2010
shown at St. Nick’s Alliance, Brooklyn, NY
Building on the exploration of basic modular forms like lightboxes to create intricate systems, the Atlantic Meadows installation blends references to nature—plants/trees, fungi networks—using entirely industrial materials. Constructed from metal pipes, electrical lightboxes, and wires sourced from local hardware stores like HomeDepot, these sculptures address ecological concerns amidst the age of advanced engineering. By employing low-tech, rudimentary materials, they evoke nostalgia for simpler times while serving as a warning of missed opportunities in the face of extinction threats. The sculptures inhabit a space that is both retro and futuristic, embodying a compelling dichotomy.
