Low-Tech Organics curated by CCYD Studio , 2003
Group Exhibition Press Release, 2003
Low-tech Organics is a group exhibition working with the idea of exploring common materials and space. Although each artist has his or her own way of working, the combined similarity lies in the handling of materials.
Cardboard, plaster, plastics, windows, BX-cables, store-bought goods, lighting, television, and video are low-tech materials. Because they are accessible and affordable, these consumables allow artists to transform everyday objects into their creations. Discarded and curbside materials—the residue of a cycle of buying and throwing away—become resources for reuse and renewal, opening new possibilities for a generation of artists working with recycled and repurposed materials.
Presentation and the use of space are equally important. Prior to creating their works, each artist was invited to visit the 38-9 Skylight Gallery. This visit allowed the artists to understand the specific characteristics and energies of the space, and to adjust their language so the work could respond to and flow within the environment.
Low-tech Organics is a collective effort to create new perspectives on what can be made through the characteristics of ready-made materials and space.
